NOW endorses Congresswoman Brown

The National Organization for Women endorses Congresswoman Corrine Brown.

In the endorsement letter, NOW Political Director Linda Berg wrote: “We are pleased to inform you that because of your dedication to feminist issues, the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has re-endorsed your candidacy for the election to the United States House of Representatives in Florida’s 5^th Congressional District. We look forward to working with you to achieve full equality for women and girls.”

Founded in 1966, NOW is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of thousands of contributing members and more than 500 local and campus affiliates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Meet Martin Luther King 3rd

Please take advantage of early voting

Dear Friends,

I hope you take advantage of Early Voting that starts this Monday (8/15) on Duval, Gadsden, Baker and Jefferson counties.

I’m looking forward to your support during Early Voting so that I can serve YOU in Washington.

Early Voting is the best way to make sure that you don’t miss your chance to vote. The official Election Day is on August 30. But what happens if you have a family or work emergency that prevents you from getting to polls on Election Day?

Thanks to Early Voting you have many more days to vote – until Aug 27 in Gadsden, Baker and Jefferson counties and until Aug. 28 in Duval County. Early voting is a lot less stressful than Election Day. The lines are few, if any lines, during Early Voting.

Regardless of whether you are voting early, or going to the polls on Aug. 30, don't forget to bring your identification -- a valid photo ID and a signature card.

Corrine Delivers for Tallahassee

Dear Friends,

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Tallahassee and would be honored to represent Tally in the U.S. Congress.

Many people know that Tallahassee is my second home because I’m a Rattler -- a proud graduate of FAMU. For many years I served in Tallahassee as a member of the Florida House of Representatives.

During my time in Washington I’ve fought for my Congressional District and the entire state of Florida. That’s why my slogan is “Corrine Delivers”.

A few of the ways I’ve delivered for the Tallahassee area include:

• ·         Successfully secured support and funding for the VA Clinic and cemetery in Tallahassee.
• ·         Fought to improve access to healthcare and other services for all veterans, with special attention to women veterans.
• ·         Secured funding for facility and infrastructure improvements at Tallahassee International Airport.
• ·         Secured support and funding for the restoration of Gulf Coast passenger rail service, which would include a stop in Tallahassee. (Passenger rail service ended in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast.)
• ·         Fought to protect Medicare from cuts and expand prescription drug access.
• ·         Fought to improve PLUS student loan program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
• ·         Helped broker a deal to transfer 3,800 acres of land and buildings from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to FAMU. This was the largest land transfer to a HBCU.

I’m very grateful for the warm reception I received when I opened my Tallahassee campaign headquarters at 1617 S. Adams St., across the street from the FAMU campus (of course).

Fix Eureka Gardens in Jacksonville

On Monday (Aug. 8) I sent this letter to Julian Castro, the Secretary of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, regarding the frightening conditions at the Eureka Gardens apartment community in Jacksonville.

Dear Secretary Castro:

I am writing to you today on an urgent matter.  Early this morning at the Eureka Gardens apartment complex located in my congressional district in Jacksonville, Florida, three gunmen fired more than 50 rounds of ammunition into a group of residents.  It is being reported that seven people were hit; and two of those shot were in critical condition, while five others were listed in stable condition.  According to local news reports, "Sgt. Shawn Coarsey of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a group of eight to 10 people were sitting outside one of the apartment buildings when three men approached and opened fire with a rifle and a pistol" (Channel 4 News, Jacksonville, Florida).

As the federally elected representative of Florida’s 5^th congressional district, I am requesting that the Department of Housing and Urban Development immediately provide increased security at the housing facility at Eureka Gardens and at the facility of Washington Heights, also located in Jacksonville.  I am strongly urging that 24 hour surveillance be provided at both HUD facilities, as well as round the clock police security. Currently, I understand that there are patrols that oversee these facilities, yet what is clearly needed is 24 hour security police for the complexes, as it has been clearly demonstrated today that the current roaming patrols are insufficient.  Both of these security provisions are essential and need to be included in the contract(s) when these properties are transferred to their new owners in the near future.

In addition, the complexes are in desperate need of secure gates, as well as a dramatic upgrade of their current surveillance cameras, which would permit the cameras to access all angles of the buildings.  I would also like to request a briefing on this matter as soon as I return to Washington following the August congressional recess. Beyond a doubt, we want to do everything possible to ensure the safety of our residents.

We’re opening Congresswoman Corrine Brown’s campaign headquarters 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7.

The headquarters in Jacksonville is at 1410 Edgewood Ave. W.
